AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES AFRICAN NEW YEAR ON JUNE 21 Sunrise Ceremony and Outdoor Celebration Honors First Solar New Year On June 21, 2023, The African American Cultural Society Inc., central Florida’s leading cultural institution, will celebrate the original African New Year. The historic day will begin at 6:00 AM with a Sunrise Ceremony at Jungle Hut Park Beach, 125 Jungle Hut Road, Palm Coast, FL and culminate with a festive celebration at The African American Cultural Center and Museum, 4422 N. US Highway 1, Palm Coast, FL. According to scholars, Africans along the Nile were the first humans in the world to discover the solar year which governs the time of the world today. The first solar calendar was developed by Africans in approximately 4,240 BCE (Before Common Era). The Dendera Solar Calendar, the oldest Zodiac in the world includes the 360 days of the African year and includes the zodiac signs we use today. The Dendera Zodiac predicted the movement of Sirius and the circular path of the sun’s orbit. It was aligned with the Northern Hemisphere’s solar year which is used in most parts of the world today. In solidarity with this accomplishment, the African American Cultural Society Inc. (AACS) will celebrate the African New Year on June 21 during the summer solstice (the longest day of the year), as an acknowledgment of this historical scientific achievement. Other upcoming events and activities by the AACS taking place at its African American Cultural Center and Museum include the Juneteenth Freedom Day Celebration; Saturday, June 17, 2023; "The Summer of 1969” Exhibit, opening July 29, 2023; First Annual Youth Book Festival: Make Your Own Story, August 18 – 19, 2023; Shirley Chisholm Tribute, November 2023; Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition "Pleibol! In the Barrios and the Big Leagues”, November 25, 2023 - February 25, 2024; Kwanzaa Celebration, December 26, 2023; and much more. The African American Cultural Society, Inc., mission is to preserve and perpetuate the cultural heritage of the African Diaspora through educational, social, cultural, and intellectual activities, and services, deemed to be in the best interest of the entire community.
