Ginger Beer

Has anyone made it before ? I have my first batch brewed up and its not to bad. this is the first time I have acually carbonated by yeast and not with a C-keg and a bottle of CO2.
I bought a couple of pounds of Ginger at the asian market used my juicer that has been in the cupboard for years and mixed two parts water to one part ginger juice and added sugar. Unfortuniatly I did not have a good brew yeast because the only store that I knew of that sold EC-118 was in Orlando and they wanted 15.00 for shipping so I went rouge and used baking yeast.

I remember now why that is not so great the ginger is firey enough to knock back the taste of yeast rolls but still it can be a whole lot better.

So Low to my surprise when I went looking for a source of yeast again I found that the store I had previously got supplies from had not closed they just moved I can't wait to go see them.

So you made a ROOT beer. :)

That's a lot of ginger ROOT. I had a hippy mate way back that was obsessed with brewing and he made ginger beer using a plant (not that kind of plant), referred to in the following link as SCOBY. I lost touch with him now and would love to bend his ear for advice. I had a quick search and i think he must have made it a bit like this.

Now in my experience, "Ginger Beer" was a tonic with a snap!

I must say, I am intrigued and ROOT, you are a true pioneer!

My soon to be Dad/Son does home brew and is going to kick it up to Keg level instead of bottles.

There's a home brew store in St. Augustine on US1. It's next to the BBQ store.

Personally, I can't stand most home beers. But I have been known to make a mean cherry wine.

I miss my Gran's elderberry wine. She refined her method over decades, boy it had some kick too. An aunt made strawberry wine once that was fantastic. She also made marrow wine (not sure what you'd call it -- giant zucchinis), but it was foul.

elderberry wine was my first when i was around 15 been making a batch now and again ever since. made some banana wine a few years back that was fantastic and of course the crackers have all tasted my loquat [-]wine[/-] brandy . last batch had a slight foul tast I couldnt get over so we had it distilled , unfortunately the foul taste was still there IMO but they drank it up at the last oyster roast anyhow at a 160 proof I guess it didn't matter.

2lb for 4 gallons its kinda not as snappy as the bottled stuff but darn sure potent and lovely sparkling . I was surprised by the amount of precipitate and juice they gave, that old yard sale juicer finally found itself useful.
once I get some EC-118 it will really be something to brag about.
